Passenger was formed when Brighton(UK)-based singer Mike Rosenberg bonded over bong hits with soundtrack composer Andrew Phillips (don't look at me, I just tell it like the release note says it is). One year later they were joined by their final three members: a kickboxing bassist, Israeli drummer, a former-member-of-a-DJ-Shadow-cover-band keyboardist.
The fact that they have a soundtrack composer in the band is the most unsurprising bit of knowledge if you listen to the album beforehand. This album is a truly wonderfully made album. The songs sound like they belong in movies and TV series, backdropping those "moments" with such finesse that you can actually feel for the actors. Not even kidding. Impeccable production helps the instruments shine through in these neatly arranged layers.
This musical tidiness is propped up further with singing that to me sounds like a mix between Brett Dennen and David Gray. The first track you're going to hear has this tip-toeing piano that I love and also splices in sound bites like Tyler Durden. The most bare-bone song of the bunch is track 10 (close tie with track 08) so give that an ear too. It sounds like the last song on the album should: conclusive.
Buy this album or come over and listen to it sometime. Use your ears.
