Yall's gonna be really happy about with Speeka. It's elegantly written folk feeling songs that leave you with a sweet aftertaste of Morcheeba's more recent album (Dive Deep, feat.Thomas Dybdahl and Judy Tzuke). Works well in the shower, on the couch, in the car, on the street... basically everything you could ask for in a band u didn't know.

Love it and get the rest.

p.s. been busy with school so i'll get back on it soon nuff

Eff yeah for some French sh*t. I always dig hearing some good music linguistically bent towards a language I think sounds beautiful (like French). It helps to understand but as I said with Pauline Croze, the sounds of the words themselves contribute their fair share of the musical enjoyment... not just the meaning (though that is surely important). Some of it is pretty gangster but I've picked my two favorite, per most of the time. Feedback? More French Hip Hop? Cuz I could make that happen.

Shady Bard - From The Ground Up

Genre: Indie Folk (Experimental)
Website: www.myspace.com/shadybard
Release Date: 2007-05-28
Label: Static Caravan

A very mellow band that heralds from the UK. Pretty chill, not jaw(ear?)dropping, but definitely fitting into that nook of your music collection along with stuff like The Album Leaf. The first track gives me feelings of Trevor Hall's To Zion. FOR SURE (cuz i'm rechecking that one now). Their title track to the album is an instrumental and that's what reminds me of The Album Leaf. Winter Coats is my second favorite song with vocals on the album and will surely do you some good on the frozen days.

Genre: Gothic Country Punk Folk
Website: www.myspace.com/odeath
Release Date: 2007-06-12
Label: Ernest Jenning Record Co.

This is a truly unique style of music. It's like old school Oh Brother Where Art Thou gospel-infused gothic take on roots country. It's the best I can do with a description and as a matter of fact, most of their songs are a little too much for my taste. That doesn't mean, however, that I'm at odds with all of their music because track one is the reason I got this album and it is a very moving and well-performed song.

Check out the other two to hear where else O'death can take you.

Label: GoodBusy (PIAS Benelux)

These guys are from AAAAAAAmsterdaaaaaaam. Baller. More indie than not, I've shared one of their chiller (and cooler) songs which is track four. It opens with this super sweet progression of accordion-like melodies that really make you feel like ur in Europe (like Yann Tiersen-esque). The two devils song at the end reminds me of the Blinded acoustic version that was on a mix a while back. Maybe you know what I mean, maybe you don't, either way you're still earing.

I've been earin' up on this guy for a few months now and only JUST realized that it wouldn't be that annoying to share it with yall because it's from the new unprotected iTunes downloads. Score! This guy knows how to use his voice like it's just another instrument he's spent years practicing (i mean, that really is what the voice is in music, but he makes it painfully obvious). Give him the love he deserves!

Another day another lady. I backtracked to 2005 with this album even though she just came out with "Un Bruit Qui Court" late last year. I just super dig "M'en Voulez Vous". Apologies for those of you who don't understand French but I would almost argue that not knowing what is being said can often make it sound prettier.

I was going through music just now and was reminded about my enjoyment of the two songs you can sample above. Niiice cuz now you can possibly attain the same level of enjoyment as me!

It's funny that the only (what look to be) decent official reviews for this album are all in Swedish. Not
too surprising given that she is from Stockholm, but still she sings entirely in English and you'd think someone who speaks that language would have done some reviewing.

Whatever. Here's a super short unofficial one. Super soft delicate vocals and super random (but not entirely ineffective) synth beats. At least they sound like synth beats cuz for all I know she could have found someone with some freaky drums (who knows what they do in Sweden :P but you won't hear these freaky beats unless u myspace her and listen to other songs). Aside from that, I love track three cuz it's right in line with that "sound that i look for" aka back to those cyclical rhythms to put it bluntly. The rest are up for grabs... not even sure which one to share but track nine is aiite cuz it's got that beat (lol) and I like what she does with her voice.

P.S. her last album had a few decent tracks. Like Winter Tour. Cool ah-ah-ah's.

I didn't know this guy was from France even though I've been listening to him since his last album (self-titled). His song "To All Of You" was on the OC if i'm not mistaken. The name is a pseudonym that comes from two Pink Floyd members: Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. This guys real name is Jonathan Morali and he brings us another batch of mostly mellow songwritery goodness with this album.

Summerside, Canada brings us Nathan Wiley. He's good. Some of his stuff is country-ish and I push the next song button but for the most part it's solid. Good mellow wallflowery track 02 will do you right and the last song, Fistfull Of Throttle, will get your groove goin.

If you check out his myspace page you can plainly see he plays some lap guitar.

Sweet.

Hybrasil - Monkey Pole

Tracklist:

11. Love Is In You

Genre: Indie Electronica Pop
Website: www.myspace.com/hybrasil
Release Date: 20007-09-07
Label: Manazo Records

I dropped the ball on this one seeing as to how it was released in September and I already liked this band (A Million Moments, not the best song, was on their last album (newer version is better which u can myspace)). It feels much cleaner and crisper than their last album which felt hectic and a wee bit unorganized. And what are the chances that the two bands I pick at random (if you were wondering, I have a place where I keep the ~100 or so albums I haven't gone through and I just grab one... lottery style) were both from the U.K. These guys are from Ireland with love.

Anyways. I like these guys. Two songs doesn't really show you how many different speeds and moods they can span.

These Scot indie rockers bring it to you just right if you are feelin' that indie flave. These are promotional discs (CDM and CDS) that yall can sample just like I did. Now that I'm beginning my first weekend of the spring semester I'll be able to bring yall some more tunage, 'specially given that Monday is MLK day.

You get two from each promo. One softer and one harder. Keep it balanced :)

Ro Tierney - Sticks And Stones

The same requester for Lenka followed up with a request for something from Ro Tierney that wasn't the song "the voice". I managed to do some more nerding on myspace and I'm working on (time has been short the last few days) nerding the rest for yall. His album is coming out in the future so stick to his myspace or the songs I'm upping.

Any feedback and requests are always welcome.

Lenka - We Will Not Grow Old

By special request (I'm telling you people, request and ye shall most likely receive) I'm sharing (only) one track of Lenka's with you people. She hasn't had any official releases (she had a self-titled EP release in Australia but there's no chance at finding that anytime soon) and as such I managed to nerd it off her myspace page. There're two other songs there worth earing, so do it already... and get We Will Not Grow Old.

Their last release, Love and Distance, was pretty darn good (my favorites were People Of The Secret and Blood Bleeds) and you can hear most of it on their myspace. Keep Your Eyes Ahead as an album (not track) is pretty chill... you get to ear my two favorites from this new album which is coming out in a couple weeks. If you like it, pre-order away!

First track is faster, second one slower.

These are some choice odds and ends and rarities (if you will) that were released on this EP during Bird's European tour. Not amazing but if you're a fan of his stuff it's always nice to hear where musical inclinations take some of our favorite artists.

Slightly Stoopid is a good band. In the vein of bands like Sublime (but not imitation), their new release exhibits a lot of progress on their part when compared to their previous releases. I like the direction they're headed in and I really like this album... especially the songs I'm sharing with yall. Ears wide open.

Trevor Hall - The Elephants Door

14. Hunuman Chalisa

Genre: Acoustic/Rock/Alternative

This album doesn't come out for a while so if you want to listen to more of him you're gonna have to go and look for some of his other releases. And yes, I know this album art is not for this album but there isn't even album art for this one yet so I had to go with something.

Trevor is a great musician. Singing like soul hip hop from a white guy who isn't in any hurry, you'll probably love most of his stuff even if a few songs are sappy. Enjoy!

By no means an amazing feat of singer-songwriting, Salim (did I mention he is from Dallas?) still puts forth a few memorable tracks. I share my two favorite here... give them a one or twice over and let me know if you were tempted to go to his myspace to check out more.

Nickodemus - Endangered Species Remixed

Tracklist:

01. Endangered Species
02. Mi Swing Es Tropical
03. Peace Pipe
04. Cleopatra In New York
05. Funky In The Middle
06. Give The Drummer Some
07. Back From Africa
08. Gibraltar
09. Crazy Stranger

12. The Global Village

Genre: Remix/Dub Afro-Beat
Website: n/a (www.myspace.com/nickodemusnyc)
Release Date: 2007-10-07
Label: ESL

Each of these tracks is actually remixed by someone worth hearing remixes from (e.g. Thievery Corporation). I got lazy and didn't type all the remix info after every track in parens. The myspace link is to the artist, unremixed, to give you an idea of where some of this stuff was before the remixing.

The first shared track is some mmmm good reggae and the second is some mmmm bop hip hop (not hanson mmmm bop though).

Cornelius - Point

Tracklist:

01. Bug
02. Point Of View
03. Smoke
04. Drop
05. Another View Point
06. Tone Twilight Zone
07. Bird Watching At Inner F
08. I Hate Hate
09. Brazil
10. Fly
11. Nowhere

Genre: Electro/Loops/Experimental
Website: www.myspace.com/corneliusofficial
Release Date: 2002-01-22
Label: Matador Records

This is not for the faint of heart. It's a little (I can only assume) Japanese dude looping the crap out of sounds. If you didn't notice, this album is really old (relatively) and I haven't heard much from Cornelius until I checked out the myspace page and noticed they (now that it says the Cornelius "Group") will be touring the US this year. Exciting!

You can check out some songs from the new album Sensuous by clicking the website link.

Raz Ohara And The Odd Orchestra - Raz Ohara And The Odd Orchestra

Tracklist:

01. Happy Song
02. Kisses
03. One
04. Fregment
05. Agony
06. The Case
07. Where He At
08. Counting Days
09. Wondering
10. Love For Mrs. Rhodes
11. Set On You

Genre: Indie/Downtempo/Electroacoustic
Website: www.myspace.com/razoharaandtheoddorchestra
Release Date: 2008-01-11
Label: Get Physical

For the first time in a while I've found a band whose three musical self-descriptions were the same three I would have chosen. Most bands are 90% there but one of the "genres" could be tweaked or subclassed.

Hailing from Berlin, Raz and his odd orchestra are another one of those puzzling bands where someone who speaks english with a (probably horrible) accent sings better than a native speaker.

Track 02 is my favorite while track 09 puts me to sleep. Track 06 is basically a coincidentally Matt Pond PA wannabe melody, right?

Tropical Jazz Big Band XI - Let's Groove

Tracklist:

01. Hip To Be Square
02. Somebody I KNow
03. C'est La Vie
04. Can't Give You Anything (But My Love)
05. Fly Me To The Moon
06. Let's Groove
07. Enamorada
08. Elegant People
09. Descarga Tropical
10. Pick Up The Pieces
11. Cerveza

Genre: Jazz/Salsa
Website: n/a
Release Date: 2007-06-25
Label: Victor Entertainment

Releases like these are always hard to discuss in a biographical framework because (if you couldn't tell from the album art) it is a Japanese release. From what I can gather this is the 11th (!!!) album from this group of musicians and this album features a number of covers from bands such as Earth, Wind, And Fire. Wherever they may be from, the language of the groove never needs translation and it should work it's wonders on you just like it does to Japanese folk.

Vera Mesmer - The Gypsy Magician

Tracklist:

01. Half The Time
02. Purpose
03. You And I
04. I Don't Like Your Tone
05. The Person I Knew

Genre: Alt. Rock
Website: www.myspace.com/veramesmer
Release Date: 2007-08-28
Label: Self-Released

I'm not exactly super hot on this guys stuff but for the select crowd of crooners of the alternative variety I'm including this in todays selection. It's worth at least a short listen even if this isn't your bag. If you know the band Reveille then you've heard Vera before because he was their guitarist. He's also worked with quite a few (to say the least) name brand rock style bands: Green Day, Sevendust, Howard Benson, Godsmack, Stone Temple Pilots, Incubus, Rob Zombie, Kid Rock, Blink182, Buckcherry, Alice In Chains, POD, 30 Seconds To Mars, Global Artist Management, Static X, Tenacious D, Hoobastank, Coal Chamber, Henry Rollins, Andrew WK, Puddle Of Mudd, Dashboard Confessions, Tommy Lee, Days Of The New, etc.

Vicious Vicious - Parade

Tracklist:

01. Rain Parade
02. Stay With Me Tonight
03. Beggars In The Rain
04. Like Foxes In The Snow
05. Ho Baby
06. Don't Let Me Down
07. Girl What's Your Name
08. Ambulance Ambulance
09. Charmed Life
10. We Don't Call It Love

Genre: Indie
Website: www.myspace.com/viciousvicious
Release Date: 2007-09-07
Label: Self-Released

Spontaneous and organ-licious. Both are pretty good tags to attach to Vicious Vicious's album Parade. The singer sorta meanders alongside these interesting almost-experimental melodies and noises like he isn't in a hurry (and he isn't).

They hail from Minneapolis, Minnesota... and according to their bio their goal was to make "songs coast by with fluid grooves that mixes... hip hop beats with roller skating music."

It's a pretty good stab in that direction but not quite there just yet (if that's really what they're going for).

Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down - We Brave Bee Stings And All

Tracklist:

01. Beat (Health, Life, And Fired)
02. Bag Of Hammers
03. Big Kid Table
04. Swimming Pools
05. Geography
06. Feet Asleep
07. Yes, Soon And Soon
08. Fear And Convenience
09. Violet
10. Travel
11. We Go

Genre: Indie Folk/Experimental
Website: www.myspace.com/thaomusic
Release Date: 2008-01-29
Label: Kill Rock Stars

Take some Tegan & Sara and mix it with some Karen O and you've got an idea of where Thao Nguyen takes us with her songs. Someone also mentioned that there's some Talking Heads meets Modest Mouse... not entirely inaccurate but still not a close enough tie for me to endorse. In any event, this is pretty hectic music with a lot going on. Thankfully this "a lot" is usually a mishmash of instrumental layers that for the most part don't sound entirely out of place.

Radical Face - Ghost

Tracklist:

01. Asleep On A Train
02. Welcome Home, Son
03. Let The River In
04. Glory
05. The Strangest THings
06. Wrapped In Piano Strings
07. Along The Road
08. Haunted
09. Winter Is Coming
10. Sleepwalking
11. Homesick

Genre: Indie Folk/Experimental
Website: www.myspace.com/radicalface
Release Date: 2007-03-20
Label: Morr Music

Radical Face is the work of a bearded giant (30 feet tall, allegedly) occasionally assisted by his friends. Experimental to the max, the better tunes on this album are rooted in built up driving layers that propel symmetric vocal melodies. I like. Track 09 is dark but givien that winter has already come I thought I'd let you guys know how one man thought it sounded in his head.

Fortune Drive - A Modern Question

Tracklist:

01. Said It All

Buttery crunches of distorted guitar. That's all I have to say about this one.

Not.

There's a lot of rock and soul influence in the singing and different tracks are giving me different feelings right now. For sure various likeness's... I'm even hearing some Butthole Surfers in track 10. Ear what I mean?

I was making some mixes for my boy Zane to listen to on his drive back to CO and this guy managed to put forth four tracks that made it onto the mixes. That should be the 'nuff said sorta thing but if you must know this guy is a really really really good mellow songwriter. There's a couple stronger songs like track 03 but you're not getting that one.

Enjoy the mell.
