This guy is real old school. If you were around in the 60's and 70's, which I clearly was not, you would know his stuff... but aside from that it's all got a pretty familiar vibe to it that lets me know I've heard these songs (or versions of them) before. It's real chill, so if you wanna kick it old school, pick this album up.

Yippee! I've been busy with term projects so that's the excuse for the lack of posting. Fortunately I do get to listen through new albums while I'm typing away at the library (just can't post them) so today I rummaged through the collection and found this little gem. Some absolutely amazing tunes. Buy this album! You will not regret it and you will obviously be happy with the sounds above and the sounds from myspace.

Out of Washington, D.C. we get some piano-driven indie pop that is pretty fun to say the least. The piano licks are highly entertaining and the drums... super sick. Under my skin is a funny song that I didn't up for yall but it's worth a good listen. There's also a live version of Victoria on their myspace which is a great showcase for how they can bust it out live.

John Zorn is a man of many flavors, constantly pushing into new sounds and styles. It's all got a very fine compositional feel to it and it's virtually impossible to get bored listening to the album because of it's jellybelly grab bag nature. Exodus even takes us into some funky blues jam sesh and that's my personal fave.

Since this band has been around a long time and is part of a big label I'm not sure they feel like they need the PR but we'll give it a shot. Putting them at seven albums deep in their long career in the alternative rock scene, this one catalogs an entire year of post-break-up experiences. Don't let it get you down because they are some hilarious dudes in this band. If you look around ab it you can find stories about concerts they put on where the only way to get a ticket is to find one of them around town and proclaiming some sort of planetary control (lol). Good stuff.

Been a bit since my last post but this one is killer! And i'm on to the next post to catch back up but let me tell you, what a great contrast provided by this album. From dub-hop to some grinding electro... mmm. "DJ, graffic designer, graffiti writer, producer, terrorist of all kind and
Missill, "the urban punk", is here to destroy all those readymade ideas you might have about DJing. Her style was described in the UK's M8 Magazine as a "sense-shredding orgy of hiphop, grime, ragga, dancehall, breaks and electro". Her passion for all things hip hop (she is a jack of all trades dabbling in graffiti, graphic designs, production, her own clothes designs and the list goes on) translated through her fingertips and energy fuels to an ever mesmerized crowd."

I'm lazy so I quote: "Originally issued in 2006 as the first disc in the Rasta Far I twofer, Overdubbed finds the mighty Dub Syndicate benefiting from the ministrations of two beatminded producers: longtime colleague Adrian Sherwood, and DJ Rob Smith (of Smith Mighty). Sherwood's raw extremedub sensibility informs the bedrock of these grooves, while Smith's somewhat more hiphopinflected approach gives them a subtly different flavor from what the group's fanbase may be used to."

Excellent dubs (most do not include vokes).

Richard Julian has been around the scene for over 10 years but until he scored it big with a gig opposite Norah Jones he wasn't getting any attention. This is his fifth solo album and it's a nice bounce around the above genres. Apparently Ms. Jones is also a fan of his music and I'm guessing she probably has some pretty dece taste in music. I like it too and I like to think my taste ain't all that bad, so ear it up.

Git reddy for the infectious beats of Phantom Planet (as made more popular by The O.C.). This is their fourth full length album and I am pretty sure I like it the most. The album (like most) manages many moods of Indie Rock so check out their other tracks for sure.

I know I know... this is what you get from shows like American Idol. But good news! I didn't know that until after I listened to it and I agree somewhat with the judges of that show because he's definitely got some oomph behind his voice. I'm guessing Walking On The Moon was something he did on the show. It's a good one. And track 11 is slow soul bluesin.

Hooray for The Weepies! The result of collaborative efforts between Steve Tannen and Deb Talan (who are now married!), this album carries the same familiar sound that I grew to love with their last album Say I Am You. Differently the same, if you will. Get the album when it comes out on Tuesday because as far as folk goes you'll be hard-pressed to find either better voices or better harmony.

She's still doin' it right and if you check over at amazon you can actually get a hard copy of this album for cheaper than it is to download it. But then again, that's not including shipping. Tristan's had me as a fan for a while now, you too?

These guys are in Copenhagen and their stuff is scrumptiously electronic. Super layered and progressive yet electronically funky enough to keep it fresh, you can't go wrong cuz there's always a time for their songs. Catch the album if you're enjoying the remixes but be warned, the remixes are a little funkier than the originals, which I assure you does not mean the original versions aren't good, they just aren't the same. Ear with love.

This here is the product of a duo doin' what they do outta New York. I was surprised when I heard their music because I had gotten it under the impression that it was a hip hop album and lo and behold it's only got one track that even smells of hip hop (which you'll hear as track 8). It was, however, a pleasant surprise, hopefully one you'll be as pleased with.

Finally got around to skirtin' the edges of my backlogged Hip Hop albums. First one to stand out is Everliven Sound, comin' atcha from Jersey. Skit Slammin' gets you some quality beats with 4.5/5 star emcee's. Some of the chori (thats plural for chorus) are a little cheesy sounding to me but I'm just following my ears. You follow yours and head over to their myspace when you're done earing the above (I love the breakbeat accordion thing goin on in track 5).

Youtube this other sick track of theirs.

The Parlor Mob - And You Were A Crow

If you're looking for some serious Rock, like, old school Rock, look no further. Takin' it to town with everything that makes you feel like headbangin', The Parlor Mob even make sure to take it the acoustic rock route with the last track. Super nice because there's nothing like finishing on a note like that. It doesn't hit storeside for another few weeks so make sure you check their myspace while you wait!

Label: India/Rough Trade

How can you possibly not like an album from an artist who has the balls to say "yeah, today's not the day to f*ck with me." I certainly can't. And with a title like that (not his name, but the album title) I almost expect some death/heavy metal complete with the flailing and screaming. Au contraire... it's beautifully acoustic serenadish tunes from his musical heart. As the fifth full length album from Gus, I've been consistently impressed with the path he's taken. Check out the last track on the album (I'm listening to it now).

My Federation - Don't Wanna Die

Tracklist:

01. Don't Wanna Die
02. Open My Eyes

11. Honey For The Soul
12. Somethings Gotta Give

Genre: Indie Rock
Website: www.myspace.com/myfederation
Release Date: 2008-04-07
Label: Eye Industries

Some truly quality indie goin' on right here. The album flows so well with different styles and tempos of indie-hearted rock and it will take you on a fantastic journey which never (at least not for me) involves the next track button. And of course... as expected... they're not from the States but instead are hailing from the UK. You'd think with sheer numbers of people the US would be putting out more and more quality artists than the UK but such is not the case. Quality not quantity. My Federation is serving to further solidify this point! Youtube :)

Chattabox/Dialect

Orchestrate feat Glass Onion

Chattapella

Dialect Crew is out of South Shields UK and Chattabox is one of their four primary MC's. Orchestrate is easily one of the best hip-hop tracks I have heard this year. It makes me want to pick up a British accent, turn up the stereo in my car, and scream things like STRAIGHT out my window at people while eating a crumpet. I can't stop listening to this song right now and I hope it infects your brain as well...

10. Drunk And Disappointed
11. Closing In

Genre: Rock/Folk/Ambient
Website: www.myspace.com/matthewryan
Release Date: 2008-04-01
Label: Megaforce

I read a review of this album and there was a fantastic quote in it: "Great music, is the music of what happens." (That's from acclaimed Irish poet Seamus Heaney). So this album is really good, and if you look at a picture of the band on myspace he looks kinda scary (if you're reading this don't misinterpret that as ugly) but guess what? The music is never about what you look like it's about what you can do with your musical creativity. I guess in the grand scheme of pop culture looks might matter but not when it really matters. I like this album a lot, so if you feel that way about the songs you ear here you'll be thoroughly contented with the rest. This album's release notes were also incorrect when first typing this; yet another lesson to double check my facts.

Sweet youtube videos (that one is Closing In) that weren't quite what I expected. Check the sidebar of that link for additional songs and vids.

Voyager One - Afterhours In The Afterlife

Tracklist:

01. Here
02. The Future Is Obsolete
03. I Remember Everything
04. Ocean Grey

09. Darling O.K.
10. Sine Waves

Genre: Indie Progressive
Website: www.myspace.com/voyagerone
Release Date: 2008-03-25
Label: Loveless

Equal parts alternative, indie, shoegaze, post-rock (to name a few that stand out), Seattle-based Voyager One is a team of two (?) who handle guitars, drums, keys, and programming who showcase other beautifully layered instruments done by guest musicians. They'll probably be seen touring with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. If you wanna hear some of their harder stuff, check out track 2 and if you want to hear other good stuff, buy the album :)

Marc Broussard - Must Be The Water EP

Tracklist:

01. Must Be The Water
02. Try Me
03. Someone You Know
04. It's Over Now
05. Y'all Ain't Ready

Genre: Pop Soul Funk Blues
Website: www.myspace.com/marcbroussard
Release Date: 2008-02-19
Label: Atlantic

Same label, different guy. Must just be that time of the month for singer-songwriters on Atlantic, but regardless, Marc Broussard is also one of those guys who doesn't need much of an introduction. He's gone from southern soul tearin' it up solo on an acoustic to backed by a full band jammin the blues-ed out funk at festivals. Either one works for me, but if you haven't been a fan of his since back in the day you should certainly take a look around the web for his older stuff.

Jason Mraz - We Sing EP

Tracklist:

01. I'm Yours
02. Live High
03. If It Kills Me
04. A Beautiful Mess

Genre: Acoustic Pop
Website: www.myspace.com/jasonmraz
Release Date: 2008-05-20 (full album)
Label: Atlantic

I don't think Mr. Mraz needs much of an introduction given his rise to the spotlight over the last 5 years or so. His new album, We sing We Dance We Steal Things, will be coming out in the latter half of May, with these tracks being non-studio versions (I'm assuming, given that they're from this-or-that session) of songs you'll find on the final product. So get your ears tuned in for what will be coming in a more full-flavored version at a later date.

06. A Black-Suited Speech
07. A Good Customer
08. The Underground Factory
09. Like A Bad Lie
10. I Tried
11. I Won't Be Stopped

Genre: Pop Indie/Surf Country
Website: www.myspace.com/ghostymusic
Release Date: 2008
Label: Oxblood Records

I'm baaaaaaack. I know all of you probably have other music resources out there and that I'm a fairly convenient one, so I apologize for my absence and am now back to return convenience and tunage to your digital doorstep.

Although an uncommon combination of genres, you'll know what I'm talking about with the surf country feel after the chorus during track 2. Their newish label, Oxblood, was started in Kansas (yeah i know... there's stuff there?) by a local radio guy and a local used-to-be drummer. The idea was the capture the sound of this band playing in a room instead of a few (or one) track(s) at a time, ultimately layered for the final poofy sound. It's not too shabby and I'm certainly throwing it on the appropriate playlists.
