"We are often told to make the most of each day. But Voxhaul Broadcast, a four piece band from Orange County, California, took this mantra to the extreme. Frustrated with the formulaic nature of today’s indie rock scene, the band decided to record and mix their debut EP “Rotten Apples” live. In one day. So on a sunny day in June the record was recorded live by Dwayne Larring, mixed by Dave Larring and later mastered by Mark Chalecki at Capitol Mastering."
p.s. I just got my Lollapalooza early bird ticket. Get em while they last.

Great band. One more that I found via Local Natives (twice removed cuz these guys play shows with The Union Line). Great album. Their past albums are pretty juicy and worth a squeeze.
"Venus Infers, on the other hand, is a small revelation. 'Everybody gonna talk, everybody gonna stare … but I don't care,' frontman Davis Fetter sang early on, and he meant it – not flippantly, just with the sort of confidence that comes from knowing you've really got something sharp to offer. With the room virtually at capacity, Fetter strolled to the microphone as the house lights dimmed, keeping the crowd waiting while he took his time to ensure equipment for this auspicious coming-out was set just right. Then he fearlessly led the quartet into 50 minutes of hearty, rousing music that in almost every regard was a cut above what passes for modern or indie rock these days. What Venus Infers has that others lack is passion, the sort you find from the Killers and Coldplay, but gratefully conveyed with much less polish. "

By way of Local Native's gig schedule I discovered The Union Line. It is exactly as I've described it above but still so much more - where Local Natives bring a tribal aspect to their playfully percussive tunes The Union Line brings soul and roots to a pop indie mentality with a dash of blues for the win. This album comes in high recommendation and is an 8-track affordable monster deserving all the attention you give it. They play with Local Natives in April... that has got to be a show to see.
Note: track is in m4a format. Save it to your desktop and play it in iTunes

Update: There seemed to be a problem with my folder on the server, but they should be working now....enjoy!
Well I have been away for a while, but because Shastud has been on it, I dont feel so bad! . Between school and other endeavors such as my new site www.ilikehops.com, I've simply been away. Anways, on behalf of Earth's recently past vernal equinox, I'm suprising you all with this little spring mix. The songs aren't necessarily about spring or anything, but just a little diddy I through together....a bit of old, a bit of new, and this and that, and such. Anyways, I hope you enjoy! On a side note, I will be attending a small Ryan Montbleau show tonight where they will be recording his 2nd Live Album. I'm soooo excited! If you don't know, then you should...

Yeah yeah this album is three months shy of being two years old but it's far from old and still plays like new. MJ tuned me into this dudes music back in the college days and I immediately purchased all his albums only to then lose them all to a failure of my external harddrive (the bane of digital existence, but then again I've gotten all my CDs stolen before so there is no truly fullproof way to keep your music). While playing with Reason 4 I had a chance to read an article by him slash about him in which he describes how he does what he does. Jump the gap if interested.

Sorry, readers, for the absence of posts relaying to your ears the wonderful things flowing into mine. Work has been crazy busy, my health has been rapidly decaying, and today I have a sick day and I will lay here in bed and spend a little bit catching up.
Phoenix is pretty much synonymous with awesomeness in just about any reference from the mythical to the marvel to the musical. This latest album from the French Indie Rock group will hit the official mainstream in late may (a ways off) and it will blow your socks off. Their other albums never ever disappointed and with expectations set so high they truly meet their own benchmarks.

Label: Merok
I don't have much time right now to say anything about this in my own words. Some music is self-explanatory and self-promoting. For those that don't agree:
"XL Records' underling label, Merok, has scooped up another hip artist [supposedly] on the rise right now: Esser.
The young London-based singer is really quite appealing, though. Hokey, weirdly catchy synth lines (usually in the key of E!) underline Esser's heavily-accented singing voice to make for an awesome, sort of glitchy, lo-fi pop extravaganza. Depeche Mode turned on its head and brightened up, perhaps.
Check out the new single, "I Love You," below and pick the release up when it's out on April 21! Exciting."

I bought this album in 2005 and have never regretted it. I was turned onto this by my love for primary member Jeff Himmelman's former duo group Brown Couch (I'll have to post that stuff later) and it takes you somewhere you're gonna wanna wish you were at much sooner. Anywhere from Wilco to Josh Rouse to Stevie Wonder... all of the above mixed into the acoustic folk rock genre and you have music spotlighting one immensely talented vocalist that never got much attention.

Way old school up in here. My job is being really time consuming but I get stuff up here when I can for my friends out there. This one is from 2005 and although you can find maybe one or two blog posts about his more recent 2008 album (Songs From A Small Town) nobody seems to say much about this killer acoustic/folk album. Melancholic in all the right ways, it will do you some good if you let it.

Local Natives Update

For those of you who were smart enough to check out Local Natives when I last posted about them the greatness that their music exudes comes as no surprise. If, by chance, you frequent this digital grotto and haven't heard them then please do us all a favor and click both links above before continuing.
Taylor (of Local Natives) has always been kind enough to keep me in the loop of his tribalistic ensemble and the loop has some new curves to it. A couple of new unreleased songs, a slew of SXSW shows followed by a west coast tour, and to top it all off a live version video of my thus-far favorite Local Natives song Airplanes shot on an abandoned 7th floor of a NYC building. It was recorded live with minimal instrumentation (percussion aux pieds et mains), maximum reverb, and you will be surprised at how cohesive their song remains regardless of their setup. Sexy stuff.
If you go to SXSW here are their showtimes... and if I find out you went and did not attend at least one of their shows I will never forgive you:
March 18th
DAY -12:00pm Spaceland/Myspace Showcase@Maggie Maes 512 Trinity St.
- 1:30pm Swing House Party@The Rusty Spurs 405 E. 7th St.
NIGHT-12:00am I Heart Austin Benefit@One 2 One 121 E. 5th St.
March 19th
DAY - 5:00pm San Jose Hotel Showcase w/Wild Beasts 1316 S. Congress Ave.
NIGHT - 1:00am Official SXSW showcase w/Elvis Perkins and Grizzly Bear@Central Presbyterian Church 200 E. 8th St.

NIGHT - 7:00pm@ Fast Folks Bike Shop 2512 E. 6th St.
March 21st
NIGHT - 8:00pm House Party 2604 Diaz St.
Last but not least there is an awesome poster and map for their shows - wish I had a hard copy so snag me one if you see one down there.
And did you think I'd forgotten? To keep you all smart and up to date you had to make it to the bottom in order to get the sweet sweet nectar from the fruits of their labor:

Genre: Indie/Folk/Alt-Country

Release Date: 2009-04-24
Label: Indigo
Albeit already plentifully publicized The Broken Family Band has a strangely captivating take on a pretty common blend of genres. Lyrics that don't follow intuitively until they've come and gone provide a smooth finish. I didn't do my homework but I do know they have at least two other releases which you can check out on iTunes while you wait for this release to hit the streets.

Release Date: 2009-05-26
Label: The Record Machine
This future release was brought to my attention by Nathan from The Record Machine. The self-titled LP is the kind of album that once you give it a listen one time through you decide it is an album that needs no excessive promotion - once it hits a pair of ears it is destined to spiderweb beyond. Immaculately crafted beats, licks, and layers all come together in the right amount of electronically infused instrumental acoustic music bordering on post-rock. It's the work of Derek Barber, formerly the guitarist of The Winston Jazz Routine and Every Gentle Air.
I know it's over two months away but I assure you it is a must-have for your collection.

This is a great little EP and as described by Myles himself:
"The entire EP was recorded live to a 1/2" 8 track... no overdubs, no punches, no computers, no click tracks, no effects... not even reverb. It was recorded and mixed in one day.
Lets see the Jonas Brothers do that.
Please burn the shit out of it and give it to everyone you know
...except me, I have plenty"
You can only get a physical copy from the Union Square Virgin store in NYC...

This album came out a few months ago but this is the newer edition with a second disc of live songs. I enjoy their live songs just as much as their studio ones - a sign that at least they can reproduce their studio material. None of their material is available to the US population via iTunes so you'll have to go with some other lesser known digital download site or perhaps get crazy and go for a physical copy (omg!).

I know this is going backwards about 11 months but I came to the realization this morning that I hadn't ever gotten this album up here. It's an epic album that listens well in a good number of moods and never fails to deliver. Keep Yourself Warm youtube video can be found here and it's a pretty fun video.

I'm pretty sure David Grisman had something to do with this getting produced/recorded but the internet is sayin all sorts of stuff about the label and I'm just gonna stop looking into it and cut to the chase. This is their third release (that I know of) and you can get some nice hints of maybe a little Ben Harper in the voice, Chris Thile in the mandolin, and sometimes I'm even left with the lingering scent of Chris Thile in the way the songs develop too. It's a great album - I dare say my favorite acoustic/folk album in the last couple of months because of it's solidarity throughout.

I had heard stuff from the last Plantlife album The Return Of Jack Splash a couple years ago, fell in love, and promptly forgot about it until I saw a track from Time Traveller on a TV radio station at my friends house a few weeks ago. It's a pipin' hot blend of soul, groove, funk, and all things related to Jamiroquai and Prince and maybe a pinch of Outkast. It's the kinda album that gets the mood goin' and I hope to ear you usin' it appropriately.

Release Date: 2008
Label: Gourmé!
Was contacted by Oscar from Gourmé! Records and am really happy he did so because Prime Ape Got The Blues is a refreshingly little-found blend of IDM, Hip Hop, and Rock. As he put it "If you appreciate fuzzy agressive basslines, anti-gangsta lyrics and humour blacker then the darkest night" then you're sure to get ya ears off to this. Baggage is a great spun-up track but make a point of getting to their myspace and checking out their other songs because it will help you make the right choice: buying their album. ChainsawBaby is the label's website and it's a well-made site so you can pick it and preview it there too.

So while browsing 75orLess records for Coltrane Motion's single (which isn't up yet) I found a band called Staggering Statistics. After checking out their website I found out that their latest album is available for f-r-e-e. Everybody loves a free album that's worth having. Doing a bit of research I found out that this Cincinnati band broke up shortly before the release of this record and nobody knows why. Surprising because the album has great production and musicianship and is the strongest of their music I've encountered so far. Oh well, they will be missed but remembered.

Coltrane Motion - The Year Without A Summer EP

Tracklist:
01. The Year Without A Summer
02. Maya Blue
Genre: Electronic/Indie/Dance
Website: Myspace |
Release Date: 2009-Spring
Label: Datawaslost (Vinyl) and 75orLess (CD with Remixes)
Last time I talked about Coltrane Motion was a little after I saw them at Halfway to Forecastle Festival in Louisville at Headliners. They were great when I saw them and now I'm happy to report that Michael Bond (the mastermind behind it all) has finally seen fit to release a couple more tracks for us fans of his. He's kicking off a spring tour this thursday with a show at The Whistler here in Chicago. It's free, so go if you're in the area. Also - the vinyl will be colored (cool!) and the 75orLess release will be limited edition screen print with remixes so that'll be a snag too. In an interview with Mr. Bond he said the following... you might find it as amusing as I did:
"Given that our particular brand of electro-dance-noise often attracts an audience that's not only lonely, attractive, but also far too drunk, we're hoping to inspire as many regrettable hook-ups among our fans as possible. We supply the kick, snare, and bass, you supply the bodies. We hope to leave a trail of awkward restroom makeout sessions across the country this summer, igniting the sexual tension that no doubt consumes the population of say, Wichita, Kansas. Other bands want to sell records? We've got a higher goal: propagation of the species."

Had a great email to wake up to this morning. A Swedish band made up of four souls that live in the woods passed me a promotional copy of their new self-titled EP due for release worldwide on LOMG records on the 14th of April. It's an EP that humbly and unmistakeably points to what one would imagine could happen to folk and blues if you mixed it with some liquor and many a night in the backwoods with some friends. Francis is born. Their other material can be found via the iTunes link and have a gander because it's just as tasty as what you can expect from this EP. Thanks Francis!
