The Tide and the Current is a powerful, concise collection. It’s shot through with confidence and beauty. It’s something about which Chris Johnson (and, one assumes, his bandmates as well) is justifiably proud. TheTide and the Current captures a band evolving from first track to last, stepping up and grabbing hold of what is rightfully theirs.

Often described as one of Canada’s best up-and-coming acts, Hey Ocean! is a young band with a remarkable talent for blending various musical styles into a brand of infectious pop that is uniquely their own. Aside from the skill of their music’s delivery, what sets Hey Ocean! apart is the spirited character they bring to the stage. Four mischievous personalities combine to form a dynamic live presence that keeps concertgoers captivated and on their feet. In fact, live performance has been an integral part of what the band calls their “natural growth,” however what began as a very casual musical partnership between friends has in less than four years, morphed into one of Canada’s most successful independent bands.

GLOVES or G.L.O.V.E.S depending how fussy you are is the side project of Yama Indra of the Damn Arms. He came to my attention with a little track called "Pyx" which featured of the Bang Gang Deejays compilation "D Is For Disco, E Is For Dancing". Sadly it didn't feature too much of the track and I wanted the hear more, now a full-length version is up for hearing on his myspace and it's great. It's hard to describe what kind of genre this track is but "Intergalatic-sexy-dumb-disco" might be a good attempt though....?

This album is filled with music that might speak to a bigger audience, but not for the sake of compromise. Instead we get music that shows us a lot of new confidence. They’ve chosen path, and the decision is based on experience instead of some nervous reaction to a crumbling industry. On Grand Letdown we get a lot more songs with vocals, the anger has been shaped into a sharper, yet poignant, tool, and the melancholy shows signs of carefully formulated optimism. The listener gets to hear an expression that’s been slowly worked out in its own time, and in an environment they themselves has chosen.

On Maps’ Mercury nominated debut album, bedroom recording prodigy James Chapman sounded like an especially blissed-out shoegazer (if such a paradox is possible), layering gauzy guitars over organs, synths and unhurried drums, and drawing inevitable Spacemen 3 and Low comparisons as a result. While Chapmans’ almost somnolent vocals ensure that follow-up Turning the Mind is instantly recognizable to fans, it’s a creative departure for the Northampton musician in other ways. That gentle guitar fuzz that coated We Can Create has been culled and replaced with stark pianos and 80s synth-pop stylings, and the lyrical focus has shifted inwards to extreme emotions, chemical imbalance and even aggression: “I will hit you hard as I can,” Chapman warns on I Dream of Crystal. Musically, Maps’ new sheen is frequently too glaring, but when it combines with an uplifting sequence – as on Love Will Come or Everything is Shattering – the results are still quite special.

Considering that Ellipse’s release comes four years after Imogen Heap released Speak for Yourself, it might seem that four years is a long time to wait for an album. However, if you consider that Speak for Yourself was released a whole seven years after Heap’s debut, I Megaphone, fans should just be happy the album is coming out before 2012, and is thus coming out at all, since 3 years from hence will be the time of the end. Seriously, Heap is a notoriously idiosyncratic artist, and it should be interesting to hear how four years of stacked-up idiosyncracy plays out over the course of Ellipse.

2007 sophomore release from the UK's mysterious and much-acclaimed Burial. Of all the artists past and present who claim to let their music do their talking for them, Untrue, is a record of weird Soul music, which lovingly processes spectral female voices into vaporized R&B and smudged two-step garage. Vocal lines are blurred, smeared, pitched up pitched down and pitch bent until their content is cast adrift from their original context and they whisper their saccharin sweet nothings into the void. Forget central heating -- the radioactivity of this album is all that you'll need to keep you warm.

Delorean are an electropop outfit from Barcelona, and they bring that city's effervescent spirit into their champagne-fizzy music. "Deli" works a bumping, Chic-worthy shuffle into a wave of fist-pumping, starry-eyed bliss, speckling the beat with pinpoint guitar and spiking it with the sort of wistfulness that can reliably send an airy dance track into ecstatic orbit: "I liked the time I spent with you, girl," goes the refrain, the sort of thing you say either at the end of a long night of partying or after a bittersweet breakup. Either way, it was good while it lasted.

Where some bands can seem a little too eager-to-please on their debuts, London's Micachu and the Shapes opt for a less accommodating, but far more intriguing, approach. They front-load their first outing, Jewellery, with their rawest, most fragmented tracks, tossing the listener into the deep end of their odd aesthetic. The trio, led by 21-year-old songwriter and part-time grime producer Mica Levi, revels in texture and rhythm, dressing up their hooky tunes in eerie buzzes and mechanical hums, retaining all rough edges and instilling peculiar timbres derived from their homemade customized instruments. The result is a queasy sort of pop music, but once your ears have acclimated to their stylistic extremes, the songs become addicting, more pleasurable than disorienting.

Neon Indian, the Alan Palomo project outside of VEGA, is gaining momentum with the announcement of the release of Neon Indian’s first LP Psychic Chasms on October 13, 2009. Palomo teamed up with video artist Alicia Scardetta who makes up the other half of Neon Indian. I think it’ll be safe to say we can expect something special at their live shows.

Hazy synths and dusty sounds, “Terminally Chill” continues down the same path Neon Indian has led us down from the beginning.

One of the most interesting and best things I've heard all year just came to me a week ago. The xx have created one of the most understated, beautiful and totally moving albums I have heard in a long time.

The debut single from the band, "Crystalised" has received copious amounts of press from NPR, Guardian, the nme and many others. Crystalised is an album highlight along with VCR, Shelter, Infinity... basically of the first 7 tracks only "Islands" is a bit of a lull and even it is good.

More inspired indie rock from this underappreciated L.A. band. The band eases into a mellower sound, but, the resulting album is a perfect fit for (what's left of) the summer months. Give it more than one spin. Like its predecessar "On the Wing Now," many of its charms simmer to the surface upon repeated listens. A must for fans of U2, the Bunnymen, Arcade Fire, etc.

Greyboy put out his first album Freestylin' back in 1994 (for the ridiculous price of only $4,000) and has consistently been pumping out albums ever since under both his moniker as well as with The Greyboy Allstars . While originally interested in hip hop, he's fused that love with acid jazz, soul, and even world beats and hasn't stopped since. All in all, an excellent disc to dip your toes in and then pick and choose where you want to dig further.

24-year old weirdo performance artist Travis Egedy, aka Pictureplane, obsesses over the cosmos, 90s house music, collective consciousness, and mind-altering chemicals you've never heard of. Much like his interests, Pictureplane's music is strange and boundless and totally righteous.

Having cut his teeth on raging tours with HEALTH, a collab with Beirut's Zach Condon and killer remixes for Crystal Castles, HEALTH, and Thieves Like Us, Pictureplane delivers his first full-length for Lovepump, Dark Rift.

Grimy synths, broken beats, and bucolic vocals collide somewhere between early 90s house music and the gnarly soundscapes of Black Dice to forge a sound that's wholly unique and endlessly exciting. It's exceedingly rare to find dance music that transcends the cold and robotic, but on Dark Rift Pictureplane does just that:churning intricate electronic jams out of his near-legendary Denver warehouse space known as Rhinoceropolis. The music feels at once personal and cosmically expansive.

After his debut album, Plastic Lions scored rave reviews all over the press in 2004, indie popster Eberg followed it with the success of a second album, Voff Voff, which saw its key track ‘Inside Your Head’ go from hitting iTunes' electronic Top 10 in the USA, to being picked up by Apple as the tune to launch their iPhone in the US.

On his third album, Antidote, Eberg filters the best moods from his first two albums - the poignant and quirky feel of Plastic Lions, and the slick off-beat pop and dance he developed on Voff Voff. From the title track, with its sweet nostalgic heartbreak and slow tunes like ‘No Need To Worry’, which tug at the heart strings, the pure, simple hooks of ‘Let’s Spend The Day Together’ and the samples and strings of ‘Your Kindness is Cruel’ this is arguable Eberg's best work yet.

The full title of this record is actually a poem...

No more stories
Are told today
I'm sorry
They washed away

No more stories
The world is grey
I'm tired
Let's wash away

...and the music within is just as ponderous and epic as that implies. For No More Stories, the band has dropped the continuous suite style of And the Glass Handed Kites in favor of discrete songs. The album features some tracks that stray from Mew's usual quiet-to-loud song structure (see "Cartoons") but their trademark epic prog-rock is still the dominant force here. This is the first time that Mew has recorded as a three-piece, since bassist Johan Wohlert left to focus on his family. The band has brought back Rich Costey, who also produced their breakout hit Frengers, to produce this album.

The band's performances throughout are pure liquid pop energy grounded by driving loose limbed rhythm . Their sound is a result of the band avoiding studio gloss by playing together in the room. Two Dancers is streamlined, minimal, and user-friendly Wild Beasts.

Denmark has established itself as a sanctuary for offbeat pop musicians. I was easily won over by Slaraffenland's "Private cinema" and Larsen & Furious Jane's "Zen sucker", to name just a few, and it is within this eccentric, peripheral vein of pop music that Alcoholic Faith Mission exist. On "Gently", which begins (and continues on as) a lavish, beautifully layered composition, a female vocalist delicately sings: "Just 'cause I'm a whore, you know it doesn't mean I don't feel it when you fuck me." This strange juxtaposition of the beautiful and the base continues on in the next track, "Nut in your eye", a track that by name alone should be on a throwaway hip-hop album, but in substance falls not too far from the realm of Broken Social Scene. "421 Wythe Avenue", while moving away from the resplendent/sexual parallelisms, continues on musically in much the same way as the opening tracks -- ethereally layered electronic elements and vocals, solid acoustic and electric guitar work, all tethered to shifting centers and uncertain musical landscapes. There is a tragic beauty here, one that blends the emotional registers of Mixtapes & Cellmates and Moonbabies, yet remains quite distinctively an original construct, and it is this ingenuity that sets Alcoholic Faith Mission apart from many of their contemporaries.
