Shovels and Rope: Oh My God
I just listened to Shovels and Rope's Daytrotter Session 5 times straight through. So, I guess it's pretty damn good. These two ( Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent) hail from Charleston, North South Carolina, and have a slew of tour dates coming up that will have them travelling ALL over the U.S. --See Below--
When I hear them I imagine the following mash-up. The Civil Wars meet Bob Dylan meet the soulful rasp of Janis Joplin and the guy-girl simplicity of The White Stripes. Then about 3-4 other older country-esque female leads and strong-willed songwriters that I don't even know well enough to use as comparisons. I've seriously been digging guy-girl duos and harmonies lately, and this one is about as raw as it gets. It sounds so old-school alt country that it actually kind of feels like it's the late 50's and you're sitting on a farm in Arkansas when you listen to it.
